Moving from Arc to Firefox

Firefox now has vertical tabs, tab groups and split view, but no swipeable Spaces. If you want those on Firefox's engine, see Arc to Zen.

Steps

  1. Back up first. Copy StorableSidebar.json somewhere safe (where it lives).
  2. Run Arc's Export Data. Mac: Arc > Settings > Advanced > Export Data. Windows: Ctrl+, then Advanced > Export Spaces and tabs > Export Data. You get Arc Data Export.md, a list of links per Space.
  3. Turn the sidebar into a bookmarks HTML file with an open-source converter such as arc-export (unofficial; read it before running), or with the kit's script.
  1. Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML.
  2. Passwords: export from Arc as CSV (see the Chromium guide), then in Firefox open about:logins > ⋯ > Import from a File. Delete the CSV afterwards.
  3. Map Spaces to tab groups or Firefox profiles; map Arc Profiles to Multi-Account Containers.

Chrome extensions won't install; look for Firefox versions on addons.mozilla.org. Sources: Firefox vertical tabs, split view.

FAQ

Does Firefox have Arc-style Spaces?

No. Tab groups, profiles and containers cover parts of it. Zen (built on Firefox) has Spaces.

Want it done in one sitting?

Everything above is free. If you'd rather follow one checklist with tested scripts (Mac and Windows) and a verification step, the Arc Migration Kit is $12 with a 30-day refund. You don't need it if the free route works for you.
